Do not mind the paintings making noises -{n}{1.0}everyone must breathe.

01thoughts=
Ah, humble beginnings! This vista is by far my most vanilla-looking one, a simple combination of decals and tiles.
Oh, and - I'm a huge fan of simple backgrounds: a common staple between many of the vistas to come.

02thoughts=
Galvanized Steel and Eco-Friendly Wood Veneers were the inspiration for this one, as silly as it is.
A tiny home, stuck to the side of a giant building conveys a great sense of scale, and ah! I'm scared of heights!
This feeling is further conveyed by the ground only being darker shades on a monochromatic background.
The moon, assembled using snow decals, gives this vista an additional sense of mystique.
And, you know - PICO-8 is right there... might as well give it a shot.

03thoughts=
A dark structure, illuminated by ominous lights{n}(Spoiler alert, for those without ears/on low game audio: it's Crystal Hearts!)
The colours of this vista were inspired by a certain scene in UNDERTALE, although red and black go together really well anyway.

04thoughts=
The minimalistic one! I made this the same day as the last one, and I did not want to do some crazy lighting shenanigans or decal-tinting.
Still, the absolute contrast of white snow and black space gives this vista a strong balance, with a bit of playfulness sprinkled in there in form of the gently floating bed.

05thoughts=
Temple Fracture - this one has a lot going on.
What I find fascinating is how a simple background allows for an incredibly detailed foreground, without feeling too overwhelming to look at.
The waterfalls move and distort in their flow, while the cracked temple walls are barely holding together - chaotic woodbeams going left and right.
And yet, the static moon in the far back gives this vista a sense of tranquility and peace.

06thoughts=
Another temple, an evil one this time!
The templevoid colorgrade is one I find particularly difficult to work with, mainly because it creates an intensely thick atmosphere.
So, I decided to fully lean into that, with strong and leading foreground pillars, and supporting background mirror shards.
A neat detail is the use of Swap Block paths: giving the temple tunnel more structure and pulsating faintly.

07thoughts=
A forest of silly creatures! The sense of depth in this vista comes from the fact that snow tiles make use of an inner padding of pure black.
This at first confusing effect is further supported by the messiness of the flora and fauna, moving and wobbling in distraction.
Officially, this vista stretches the concept of "Vanilla", as it uses a custom xml to achieve the tileset layering - and was thus made by the Vanilla Contest ruleset.
One can achieve this illusion in a similar way with black foreground decals, but it requires much more space to do so.

08thoughts=
This is your glimpse at God.

09thoughts=
Behold! My Core Machine!
This vista makes full use of the incredible repertoire that core decals are - with a few tricks here and there!
Quick backstory, I had a persisting issue that the fake heart, probably the most elusive part of this vista, would simply not appear.
Turns out, it only functions properly if the Player Spawn is to the right of it! This shows how quirky vanilla mapping can be quite well.
Other than that, I want to comment on the wires going offscreen:
Implying that there is more, perhaps machine, perhaps other structure, can go a long way in creating a feeling of grandness and "I'm only looking at a small part of a huge construct! Whoa!"

10thoughts=
Badeline is back and she is PISSED!
I really wanted to use the tentacles for a long time, and an evil and twisted Reflection setpiece works wonderfully here.
This vista evokes a feeling of smallness, and insignificance. The tentacles create an arch spanning more than half of the upper screen, all wiggling and moving threateningly.
The next vista focuses on tentacles again, in a similar way. I just couldn't get enough of ‘em.

11thoughts=
Tentacle Adventures Part 2! Here, the tentacles are used more in an algae way - wet and wobbly, reaching towards a black sky.
Making the foreground objects fit to the organic nature of the tentacles was quite a challenge, but somewhat recreating the shapes with background tiles helps smoothen the visual transition a bit more.

12thoughts=
What is this, a crossover episode?{n}This vista is inspired by all things Sib!
When squinting one might see two claws, from left and right, holding a crystal - perhaps the intended vision?

13thoughts=
Something fishy is going on here...
This vista was the main inspiration for Fish Waltz' visuals - with some tweaks, that is.
Once again, clothes lines are going offscreen, implying that there is more to this place.

14thoughts=
This vista might feel familiar to some. A certain screen in 5B might be the reason for that...
This dilapidated temple aesthetic was a tough one to get right - using black snow decals to take small chunks out of tiles definitely helps, and the screen being a familiar sight, flipped on its head, does so too.
Bonus points for the underhang vibe, something I'll further reflect on in a later vista.

15thoughts=
Alright, alright, I know what you're thinking - I made this before Manifold was a thing! I'm innocent!
In all seriousness, the power of green! This piece is a very lively one, with swaying grass, jumping flutterbirds and moving stars in the background.
And of course, the highlight: a util/bloomgradient as radiant sun! I really wanted a bright blooming highlight like this once, and the bloomgradient does an incredible job at that.

16thoughts=
An evil machine... and various screens! They are the focal point in this vista, bright and glaring in a dark and shabby room.
In reality the central screen is more of a window, with low-opacity noise stylegrounds moving in the background - allowing for the PICO-8 atlas to scroll down slowly before it.
The other screens are made with different types of layering, and the atmospheric light flicker using hidden campfires.
And finally, the audio side of things: a multitude of conveyor belts really up the ambience with a rough rattling, seemingly coming out of the illuminated central computer.

17thoughts=
Girliepop! Bright pink, white stars and violet roots hanging.
The underhang vibe is one I absolutely love - the feeling of being underneath a giant structure, or a world flipped on its head.
To really give this vista the "Br1ght P!nk, in my eyes! It burns beautifully!" feel, I toned the dirt using low-opacity snow decals - subtle, but a noticeable detail!

The geyser that gives this land form -{0.5}{n}
Stands tall at the center of the kingdom.{>>}
This vista was, surprise surprise, inspired by the dark fountain from DELTARUNE! Well, with some artistic freedom involved.
The fountain itself was created using summit launch slices, rising with different speeds.

19thoughts=
This vista is a dip into playing with perspective - a large, open field dotted with ominous lights, leading up to a giant, unknown site.
It speaks for itself, doesn't it.

20thoughts=
This one was the result of a quick break I took - nothing particularly ground-breaking or fancy, just a regular cave with some woodbeams and spikes.
Subtiling with vanilla tilesets can be a challenge due to rounded corners, but I decided to embrace the imperfection this time around.
Seeker Barriers give the rock a mysterious sparkle and elusive glow... Don't get too distracted though! The hazards are real!

21thoughts=
Shoutouts to floracat for enlightening me about nature decal layering and to Neva for inspiring me on the white structures.
Other than that, there isn't much to be said about this one - look at it for a while, and move on.
