The ancient Chinese believed that all things in the world were composed of Five Elements: metal, wood, water, fire, and earth.

The Five Elements allelopathy. It was recorded in the Shangshu·Hong Fan:

The order of Five Elements is: first for water; second for fire; third for wood; fourth for metal and fifth for earth.

The water is the source of all things, and all things ultimately belong to water.

The Eight Diagrams Theory is the continuation of Yin Yang and Five Elements, Later generations divided everything into the eight trigrams

Therefore, it was said that "The Wuji forms an embryonic Taiji, the two opposing forces manifest Liangyi(namely yin-yang), They produce four phenomena,

The four phenomena generate the eight trigrams which create everything in the world."

According to legend that Pangu Separates the Sky from the Earth, The light things rose to the sky and the heavy things fell to the earth, which giving rise to the Yin Yang balance.

Afterwards, people used symbols to represent Yin and Yang,

The combination of Yin and Yang produces the four phenomena, and the combination of the four phenomena produces the Eight Trigrams.

Each divinatory symbol has three lines, the complete line represents yang, and the broken line represents yin.

The divinatory symbol "Qian" is three complete lines while the divinatory symbol "Kun" is three broken lines.

The divinatory symbol "Zhen" means that the two lines above are broken lines, the bottom line is a complete line,

while the divinatory symbol "Gen" means that the top line is a complete line, and the bottom two lines are broken lines.

The divinatory symbol "Li" means that the line in the middle is a broken line, and the others are complete lines,

while the divinatory symbol "Kan" means that the line in the middle is a complete line, and the others are broken lines.

The divinatory symbol "Dui" refers to the top line as a broken line, and the others are complete lines,

while the divinatory symbol "Xun" refers to the bottom line as a broken line, and the others are complete lines.

In addition, each hexagram of the Eight Trigrams also belongs to one of the Five Elements:

The divinatory symbol "Zhen" is located in the east, and the divinatory symbol "Xun" is located in the southeast. Their elements belong to wood;

The divinatory symbol "Kan" is located in the north. Its elements belong to water;

The divinatory symbol "Li" is located in the south. Its elements belong to fire;

The divinatory symbol "Gen" is located in the northeast, and the divinatory symbol "Kun" is located in the southwest. Their elements belong to earth;

The divinatory symbol "Dui" is located in the west, and the divinatory symbol "Qian" is located in the northwest. Their elements belong to metal.

Tips: The ancient Chinese recorded that the orientation was left east and right west, up south and down north.
