hey there
its goose
how are you?
gonna try to keep this brief but heres an explanation on where this has been and why its probably shorter then anticipated
after day 7 i took a pretty long break but i came back with a lot of ideas and ambitions
it was a huge scope, something which was definitely doable for me, but a lot overall
if you were to look in the files you could likely find old remnants of this and whatnot
i made steady progress but the most i really got was 2 and a half flags, after like two months
truth be told, working on the project was super taxing mentally, at my core i never liked to work on it,
yet i did! woohoo!
after that it took around a month of doing really nothing for me to realize that this was unhealthy, so i put this together.
i hope you can still find enjoyment in this, even if you know the backstory
have a good afternoon, and thanks for listening

Hi there. Thank you very much for playing The Beginner's Guide.
My name is Davey Wreden, I wrote The Stanley Parable, and while that game tells a pretty absurd story, today I'm going to tell you about a celeste mod which has captured my heart.
We're going to look at "goose's red lava", made by a friend of mine named goose.
Now this map means a lot to me. I met goose in early 2022 at a time when I was really struggling with some personal stuff, and their work pointed me in a very powerful direction, I found it to be a good reference point for the kinds of creative works that I wanted to make.
This was actually the first map of theirs that I ever played, this was shortly after I met them at a weekend game jam in Sacramento where I grew up.
I saw them working on this very level, and it was just so different from anything that anyone else was doing so right away I was like, I have to make a fusion map with this person.
So if you've reached this point, you probably have played the majority of what this map has to offer.
Today, I'll highlight why I found it so touching back in 2022, it may be a long analysis, but I do believe theres a lot to be said here.
This level is a stunning testament to the creativity and ingenuity of the Celeste modding community. What makes "Goose's Red Lava" truly exceptional is its artistic design, the hidden messages and meaning it conveys, and the remarkable way it combines seemingly nonlinear gameplay with knowledge checkpoints.
The artistic design of "Goose's Red Lava" is nothing short of breathtaking. Goose has taken the basic framework of Celeste and transformed it into a visually striking and emotionally resonant experience. The use of red lava as the central motif adds a sense of urgency and danger, which complements the game's core themes of perseverance and personal growth.
One of the most striking aspects of the level's design is the use of contrasting colors and lighting. The vibrant red lava against the dark background creates a stark visual contrast that draws the player's attention. This clever use of color not only enhances the level's aesthetics but also serves a gameplay purpose by highlighting safe zones and obstacles.
"Goose's Red Lava" goes beyond being just a challenging platformer; it conveys profound messages and meaning. As players navigate through the level, they can uncover hidden messages and symbols that provide insight into the modder's intentions. If you notice the three dots near the left side of the screen- thats a standard motif of Goose's which can be found in the rest of their "Gamer Week 2" Maps, if you look hard enough that is. This level has it in your face the most, but this signature of sorts, really ties the levels together and says a lot when you disect the meaning behind it.
One of the most remarkable aspects of "Goose's Red Lava" is its seemingly nonlinear design. The level presents players with multiple branching paths and challenges, creating an illusion of choice and freedom. However, Goose has masterfully incorporated knowledge checkpoints that subtly guide players along a specific narrative arc.
While players may feel like they have the freedom to explore, the level's design ingeniously ensures that they ultimately follow a predetermined sequence of challenges. This clever blend of nonlinearity and guided progression adds depth to the gameplay experience, allowing players to feel both agency and accomplishment.
"Goose's Red Lava" showcases a myriad of artistic principles that can be derived from its design. The use of symbolism through hidden messages encourages players to engage with the level on a deeper level, prompting them to reflect on the narrative and its relevance to their own lives. This demonstrates how video games can serve as a medium for conveying complex ideas and emotions.
Furthermore, the level's aesthetic choices, such as the contrast between red lava and darkness, highlight the power of visual storytelling in gaming. It serves as a reminder that every element of a game, from its art and sound design to its mechanics, can contribute to the overall narrative and emotional impact.
"Goose's Red Lava" is a true masterpiece of modded level design in Celeste. Goose's artistic prowess is on full display in this level, from its visually stunning aesthetics to the hidden messages that resonate with players on a personal level. The brilliant fusion of seemingly nonlinear gameplay with knowledge checkpoints showcases the modder's keen understanding of game design and narrative storytelling.
This level serves as a testament to the boundless creativity and passion of the Celeste modding community, as well as the potential for video games to convey powerful messages and emotions. "Goose's Red Lava" is not just a level to be conquered; it's an experience to be cherished and contemplated, making it a must-play for fans of Celeste and anyone interested in the intersection of art and gaming.

hey there!
good job finishing the week, i bet it was tricky!
this is the part where i do my "gooses big reveal"
this week map pack was not made in a week. all of these maps were a series of maps thrown together for a practical prank! wowie zowies!
there is no gamer week 2, all of these maps are either maps ive had from other places or just really old scrapped maps!
ill go through the individual maps now:
{# fcf477}Shellectric Resort{#} Was one of my first maps, it was a mid resort map with shells.
When Summer Collab opened up, I thought itd be pretty comical to add lightning to the map, call it an electrified resort map, then submit it to that.
However, the collab didnt pan out, so now the map sits here!
{# a2c553}Shrimped Up Springs{#} Was my scrapped shrimp contest map. Sadly, I did not make a map for the contesdt because nothing I made felt shrimpy enough :(
{# ea5656} goose's red lava{#} is just goose's green/blue lava with a different color and a hub room
{# d4dd8c}phoning the day in{#} was a funny little layout i made some time in 2021, thats why the map has incredibly rushed deco since I decided to do that now :)
{# efda21} THE SOLATRIX{#} was a birthday map i made for donker19 roughly two years ago by now! he got to play the map privately and really enjoyed it, i just never released it publicly.
it also had an arg which i removed haha
{# d79898} goose made gm AGAIN{#} is a series of rooms taken from some of my random scrapped maps
its three rooms are taken from a small bday map for a friend, a scrapped cassette/bouncehelper map, and a really wacky 2000m room for a really wacky summit map
lastly, i wanna give a huge thanks to {# ff0000}o{#}{# ffa500}k{#}{# ffff00}n{#}{# 00ff00}a{#}{# 0000ff}n{#}{# ba55d3}o{#} for being the original concept behind this! it was their idea to take shelletric resort and add it into the gamer week, and see how long it takes for people to notice.
it was a really funny idea in my mind, so i decided to scope creep it into a whole lobby!
either way, i really hope you enjoyed the maps!
