Hey Madeline!
I'm here to tell you about the first part of Celeste.
Madeline, the main character, doesn't nessecarily have an unusal childhood.
See, the game starts with her already about to climb Celeste mountain, however, the circumstances leading up to that are shown a little.
We know from her diolouge that she strugles with mental health, and decided to climb the deadly mountain on a whim, just to prove to herself that she could.
Granny, the character who's talking right now, also tells her that the mountain has some sort of magic, which adds to the abnormal circumstances.

[MADELINE left normal]
Wow! Thanks! How helpfull! It's almost as if your diologe is being written for a school project!

It's a very good game, and some of the best parts are the story!
So please, proceed with caution.

Departure2Theo=
[THEO right normal]
The call to action in Celeste is when madeline desides to climb Celeste mountain.
She has no experence with climbing mountains, and is fed up with how her life is, so she desides to do whatever she can to change things up and prove to herself that she can do what she puts her mind to.
The character that is talking right now, Theo, also acts as major motivation for Madeline early in the game, as he is the first truly friendly face she meets on the mountain.
Interacting with theo gives madeline another goal other than climbing the mountain, as she learns to stop, talk, and make friends along the way.

Departure3Badeline=
[BADELINE right normal]
In chapter three, the main antagonist of the story is intoduced.

[BADELINE right scoff]
Haha, did I get you?
[BADELINE right upset]
The "Other part of Madeline" or "Badeline" as she is called, represents the part of Madeline that wants to go home.
That means that Badeline represents everthing from Madeline's doubts to her struggles with mental health.
She also represents crossing the treshold, as in chapter three the magic effects of the mountain show in full force.
Madeline wakes up in a dream and meets Badeline for the first time, as the magic of the mountain brings Badeline into existance.
It also marks the first parts of the story where Madeline has to confront her past, which she resolves by calling her mom, giving her a bit of peace as she continues on her journey.
[BADELINE right normal]
You can dash into that heart behind me to end the level.

CH3_OSHIRO_FRONT_DESK=
[OSHIRO right normal]
Why hello Ms\. Madeline!
I’m Mr\. Oshiro, the ghost patron of the Celestial Resort Hotel (although I don’t know that I’m dead in the actual game.). The wondrous setting of chapter 3 of the game!
In this chapter, Madeline must complete tasks to get out of the Hotel, lining up perfectly with the trial stage of the hero’s journey.
These tasks are mostly cleaning up the messes that would naturally be in a long-abandoned hotel, which Mr\. Oshiro is too worried about to clean, so Madeline offers to help.
I also give Madeline trials as it relates to her emotional well-being. She must try to satisfy my want to give her a nice stay at the hotel when she just wants to continue climbing the mountain.
This ends with Badeline appearing and berating Mr\. Oshiro about how inhospitable he has been, which is what Madeline has been thinking this whole time.
This makes Mr\. Oshiro believe that Madeline doesn’t care about him, and results in a chase scene, ending with Madeline leaving the resort.

Initiation2Theo=

[THEO right normal]
The next chapter, chapter four or “Golden Ridge” is mostly just gameplay until the end of the level.
In the end of the level, Theo and Madeline must take a gondola to the next part of the mountain they need to climb.
They get in the very old gondola and pull the lever inside, and head off towards the next area.
This is until the gondola stops in the middle of its path, stranding Theo and Madeline in midair.
Theo then tries to get the gondola going again by pulling the lever, but he breaks it, sending Madeline into a panic attack.
Badeline also appears (although only the player can see her), fitting her role as an embodiment of Madeline’s dobuts.
Theo, acting as a mentor, helps Madeline through her panic attack by leading her through breathing techniques that his grandpa had taught him, which helps her calm down.
Afterward, the gondola miraculously starts up again, and they may continue on their journey.

Initiation3Badeline=
[BADELINE right normal]
Celeste doesn't have any paralells to "The special Weapon", so the next part is The Abyss.
The Abyss is represented by chapter five, the Mirror Temple.
In chapter five, Madeline is faced with being seperated from Theo, and having to deal with a dangerous, and very dark temple.
Especilly after being shaken at the end of the last chapter, this affects Madeline badly, although using what she learned earlier from Theo helps.
As she aproaches the end of the chapter, things are generally looking up. She manages to save Theo from the temple, and they go to make camp.
Late at night, Madeline has a confrontation with Badeline. Madeline says that she doesn't need Badeline, and that Madeline should just let go of the part of her that is Badeline.
This part of the story is The Transformation, although it is actually a false transformation, as this attempt to leave Badeline behind doesn't work.
Badeline is a part of Madeline, and considering her role in the story, it's really imposible to just "get rid" of her, just like you cant just "get rid" of your doubts or anxiety.
This leads to Badeline knocking Madeline down to the base of the mountain, starting The Return Home.
In Celeste, this is more of a return to where Madeline started, making this "Return" much less happy than the traditional hero's journey.
It does, however, have some similarities to the problems Odysseus faced when he returned to Ithica.

CH6_OLDLADY=
[GRANNY right normal]
In chapter 6 "Reflection", Madeline must start her return up the mountain. She now must reflect (get it?) on her actions and how they led her here.
Throughout the chapter, you can tell that Madeline is feeling disheartened. She did what she thought she had to do at the end of the last chapter, but ended up at her (quite literally) lowest point.
Through this reflection, and help from her other mentor, Granny (the one who is talking right now) Madeline learns that she must find Badeline, and make amends with the other part of her.

CH6_BOSS_ENDING=
[BADELINE right sigh flip]
{silent_trigger 0 Music starts}
After a long fight with Badeline, Madeline talks with her.
Madeline makes it clear that it was wrong of her to try and get rid of Badeline, and that it's okay for Badeline to be afraid of change, of climbing a mountain, of going out of their confort zone.
This marks the start of the Mastery of Two Worlds, even though The Return hasn't ended.
The story has reached it's climax, and most of the plot threads have been resolved, but the mountain hasn't been climbed yet.
{trigger 1 Madeline puts hand on Badeline}
Madeline and Badeline realize that, without accepting each other, they can't achive what they set out to do.
By helping each other, they make their final accent, they go to slay the dragon, they finish their final task, using their ultimate boon, understanding.
This allows them to reach new heights (quite literally), and manifests in gameplay.
